Turning Lived Experience into Lifelong Learning!
Susan has been actively engaging with 3D’s courses at Café 71. She has recently completed our Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace Level 2, and Substance Misuse Level 2 courses, and is now enrolling on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Level 2 course.
She first heard about 3D through word of mouth at Café 71. At her current stage of recovery, engaging her mind through learning has been incredibly beneficial. While some topics can be triggering due to their nature, the courses have helped her gain a deeper understanding of herself and make further progress in her recovery journey.
With significant lived experience and prior training, Susan finds 3D’s courses instrumental in working toward her future goal of becoming a mental health support worker or crisis worker. The fact that these courses are funded is especially valuable, removing financial barriers for those unable to work due to mental health challenges.
Susan explains that the courses are helping her manage and overcome triggers. In the past, certain topics could cause a physical reaction, but now she is learning to respond more positively. This progress is also improving her interactions with others, enabling her to manage and navigate difficult moments more constructively.
Since completing the courses, Susan feels more confident and capable. She regularly reflects on what she has learned, considers different scenarios, and applies her knowledge in practical ways. The training has motivated her to continue learning, often researching topics independently to build further confidence in real-life situations.
She has gained valuable knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act, which has strengthened her ability to support her family and others. Susan now feels more confident in signposting, safeguarding, and helping others effectively.
Susan particularly enjoys the way the training is delivered. The trainers are supportive, approachable, and make learning engaging and enjoyable. There is no pressure, and the environment is encouraging and inclusive.
The training has already helped Susan secure a volunteer role, where she is currently shadowing a crisis group. Her long-term aspiration is to become a crisis worker, mental health worker, or counsellor at Café 71.
Susan highly recommends 3D and often shares her positive experiences at Café 71, highlighting how the courses support both personal recovery and the ability to help others.
