Talent Match Plus – Interview with Jonathan Aplin

Talent Match Plus

Talent Match Plus (TMP) is a Big Lottery/ESF funded project designed to provide support to young people looking for long term employment.

TMP have a team of mentors throughout the Liverpool City Region who work closely with people aged 15-29. The TMP team offer various support to help young people rebuild their lives. This includes intensive mentoring to help them gain employment, access training or apply for further education.

TMP work with a number of approved training providers, therefore they can pick and choose training and courses to suit the needs of their caseloads. Three Dimensional Training Limited (3DT) are one of their preferred providers and have delivered a variety of different courses for young people on their TMP journey.

These range from;

  • An introduction to Fitness & Wellbeing
  • Paediatric First Aid qualifications
  • Food safety qualifications
  • Health & Safety qualifications – preparing you for the workplace

3DT were keen to hear how TMP has directly impacted young people’ s lives. Jonathan Aplin recently attended the Introduction to Fitness programme and was happy to be interviewed to share his thoughts on the programme and training.

"Talent Match Plus absolutely changed my life, and that is not an over-exaggeration, it helped get me from a very dark and lonely place to becoming somebody I can feel proud to be.

However, it isn’t all just about becoming ‘more employable.’ The mentors are there for you on a personal level too."

After dealing with some difficult circumstances in his personal life, Jonathan was approached by Forum Housing who introduced him to the Talent Match Plus team, it was then his journey began.

Jonathan spoke of his admiration and gratitude for his personal mentor Sandra Platt, whom he has daily contact with and jokingly called her his ‘guardian angel.’

"She has just always been there for me" Jonathan explained. "She genuinely cares about how I am feeling and what I am thinking. She contacts me when she thinks any new event would be fun or beneficial to me. It is because of her that I want to become a mentor myself, to help others in the same way."

Sandra suggested Jonathan should think about attending the Introduction to fitness and wellbeing course. Although he admitted he wasn’t really in a state of mind that he thought he would enjoy or gain from this type of opportunity, he decided to give it a go.

"It gave me so much confidence within myself, before that day I was sceptical, I felt like nobody wanted to be around me - and therefore I didn’t want to be around them. But the amount of positivity I gained from the class, both physically and socially started me on a journey I never thought possible."

After that class, Jonathan explored some of the other classes and open days TMP and 3DT had to offer. Within a few weeks, he was attending three or four different events every week, as well as being a great platform for social activity these courses often resulted in qualifications to further enhance his CV.

Jonathan is well on his way to achieving his dream as he is currently part way through his mentoring course, hopefully soon Jonathan will be somebody’s all important, life changing Guardian Angel. Good luck Jonathan from everyone at 3DT!

3DT are working closely with TMP to offer accredited or tailor made inclusive courses with the aim of helping even more young adults on Merseyside.

Three Dimensional Training & Magenta Living’s new partnership 2017.

The opportunity for us to really use our creativity and make something different and amazing happen!

Sally Ross, Magenta Living’s Community Engagement Lead Officer invited us to one of her WOW (Working on Wirral) events and it all started from here. Sally and Rachael have often talked over the years about working together, they both share the same "enthusiasm and excitement" about making a difference to people lives. Sally shared her thoughts with Rachael about wanting to do something a little different to engage some of her tenant’s who were struggling with various issues and who wanted to make a change in their lives but didn’t quite know how to. Cue "Inspiring Dreams"! Rachael listened to Sally and started to work on pulling together an innovative, creative and most of all a "different" course. Inspiring Dreams spans over 2 weeks and incorporates a Team Building, "boot camp" run in partnership with UTS Training Station (should we include link to website?), lots of ice breaker activities, individualised goal setting, pictorial life plans, resilience awareness and coping mechanisms, confidence building, mock job interviews, nutrition advice, wellbeing and even a spot of group hypnotherapy and yoga!

"Magenta Living have worked with various training providers to identify courses that meet the needs of our tenants who are a significant distance from the labour market. We had found that a lot of providers would tell us what they delivered rather than listening to what we wanted and working creatively to find a solution that would meet our needs. Rachael and I had a shared vision for Inspiring Dreams, recognising that it would fill the gaps left by other more traditional employment programmes. Three Dimensional Training’s network of trainers brought together the multi-disciplinary skills needed to turn that vision into a successful reality."

Sally Ross, Magenta Living’s Community Engagement Lead Officer

The programme was such a success that Sally & Rachael have now evolved to include the 1st group into supporting the second groups development for the next planned course. They are going to be "mentors" and advocates for the course going forward. They are all booked to attend a mentoring training session delivered by Three Dimensional Training and will play a pivotal part in supporting the recruitment onto the next course and the wellbeing of the attendees on the course. It is envisaged this will be a "rolling approach" for the continuation of Inspiring Dreams.

The next course is booked for 11th July 2017, please contact Rachael Davies for more information.
